The ACSO was created in 1745 when Joseph Thompson was appointed as the first sheriff. At first
sheriffs were appointed for a 2-year term. Then in 1895, citizens started electing sheriffs for 4-year terms. Lucian Watts was the first elected sheriff.〔(Albemarle County Sheriff's Office - History )〕
